The Quick Lowdown:
Taste: Full of taco flavour but mild in spice. Perfect for kids and families.
Difficulty: Beginner. The kids can help with this recipe.
Return for effort: Takes less energy to make than going to the store to buy a packet of taco seasoning.

Why We Like This Recipe
We like to make our own homemade spice mixes so we can still have all the fun mixes and flavours, like this gluten free taco seasoning, in a way that is safe for us. We use the spices from brands that we have researched that are safe for us. Some of the ready-made packets contain common allergens or gluten and we cannot eat them.
The other reason we prefer to make our own chicken taco seasoning is the cost is generally a lot cheaper for us. Feeding a family of 6, with some of them really hungry teens, can cost us a lot of money. This is how we help to save money on our grocery bill.
We also love that we can tailor the mix to the meat we are using. This recipe is specifically for chicken but will work for beef or pork.

The Ingredient Low Down
Spices
Cooking can be really tough when you have food allergies because sometimes your allergens can be found in places you least expect them. For those who are not able to have items with cross contact with your allergens be sure to check with the manufacturer to see if their spices are safe for you.
This is also something that needs to be checked for gluten free spices. Inorder for this mix to be a gluten free taco seasoning it must be made in a kitchen with no cross contact and from spices that are certified gluten free.
Spice Tip
If you have a mustard allergy or another spice that may not always be listed on the ingredients, it is really important you check with the manufacturer for shared lines, if that is an issue for you. In some countries, like the USA, mustard is not listed as a common allergen.

Instructions and Tips

Step 1
Measure the spices out into a small bowl. You can double or triple the recipe to have a larger amount if you make a lot of taco seasoning meals.

Step 2
Pour the spices in your spice container. Using a funnel will help to not spill the spice mix on the counter. Put the lid on the container.

Step 3
Shake the container to mix the spice. Or you can mix them in the small bowl and use them right away.
Large Batch Tip
You can double or quadruple the chicken taco seasoning recipe to store it for up to 6 months.

Substitutions, Variations, & Adaptations
- Salt-free - If you prefer a low salt option for chicken taco seasoning you can reduce the salt, omit it, or use a salt replacement in this spice mix.
- Paprika - we use smoked paprika but you can use sweet or spicy, if you prefer.
- Herbs - dried cilantro can be added to the taco seasoning mix to add a bit of colour and flavour.
- Spicy - add more cayenne pepper to spice up the spice mix.

Storage and Reheating Instructions
Storage
We recommend storing the spices in a cupboard or drawer out of the sunlight. The taco spice mix should be kept in an airtight container for up to 6 months. The gluten free taco seasoning spices will lose their flavour if they are kept longer.
Equipment
This super easy chicken taco seasoning recipe doesn't need a lot of equipment to make it. There are really only two things you need. Something to measure out the ingredients and something to store the mix in.
- Measuring Cups and Spoons - dry measuring spoons to measure the spices.
- Funnel - to cleanly transfer the spice mix from the bowl to the spice jar.
- Storage Container - this can be BPA free plastic or glass. We use a glass canning jar as it does not hold the smell of the spices. The container needs to have an airtight lid to keep the spices fresh and free from pests. You can also use a glass spice jar for this taco seasoning mix.
Which Recipes To Use Taco Seasoning Mix In
These recipes are perfect to use the taco seasoning mix in. You can replace the spices in some recipes such as the chicken fajitas or marinated chickpeas with this gluten free taco seasoning blend. We use our budget friendly taco spice mix in our slow cooker chicken tacos and any place we would use a taco packet.

Notes
Allergy Note 1
Always check that each ingredient is safe for you. Reading all the ingredients and labelling as well as checking with the manufacturer should always be done before buying any product. Each person's allergies are different and only you and your medical team can determine what is best for you. Checking with the manufacturer is best practice to see if shared lines, or facilities are used when making any of the suggested products. Just because a product is right for us does not mean it is safe for anyone else. You must do your own research on each product.
Allergy Note 2
If making this recipe for anyone with an allergy always check with them for suitable products and ingredients. Each person knows their allergies best and can advise on what is safe for them to eat. Keep in mind that if making for another person they may not be able to eat it with shared prep surfaces, cooking equipment, and kitchens or other safety reasons.
Allergy Note 3
This is not medical advice. Always discuss your allergies, nutrition, and suitable products and recipes with your medical team before using.
